Abstract

Radioactive sludge, e.g. that which may accumulate in irradiated nuclear fuel element storage ponds, is treated by pumping it from a settling tank 10 to a particle separator, conveniently a hydrocyclone 22 and a sloping plate separator 26, the liquid being returned to the settling tank 10 and the solids being metered into a drum 50 pre-lined with dry cement. The drums are in a containment box 49 in which they are transferred to a mixing station where the particles and cement are mixed and thence to a curing station. After curing the drums 50 are embedded in cement in outer containers 51 (cf. Figure 7, not shown) for transport to a long-term storage site. <IMAGE>
