Abstract

An inclined fuel injector 7 injects atomised fuel towards the centre of a spheroidal pre-combustion or swirl chamber 3, which is contained within a cylinder head 4, for mixing with air pre-heated by a cylindrical glow-plug 8, mounted transversely and centrally in the chamber 3 and having an internal electrical resistive heating element which is energised only during starting, the fuel/air mixture self- igniting and passing through a duct 5 into an associated cylinder 1 where combustion is completed. <IMAGE>
