Abstract

Only the stator discs 22 of the multi-disc brake are provided with grooves for the radially inward flow of liquid coolant from inlet passage 28 to outlet passages 32c; the surfaces of rotor discs 20 are smooth to prevent their producing a centrifugal pumping effect. The brake includes a non-rotating outer housing 14, a centrally disposed drive shaft 13 extending through the housing 14, a plurality of axially moveable stator and rotor brake discs 22, 20 and a fluid actuated piston 24 for squeezing the discs together, the passage 28 being defined by a portion of the non-rotating housing disposed about the outer periphery of the stator and rotor discs. <IMAGE>
