Abstract

The invention provides a safety device for a fastening machine such as a stapling machine which prevents ejection of a staple if an operator's hand or finger is present between the stapling head and the anvil during a stapling operation. The safety device comprises a blocking piece 40 normally maintained between the relatively movable hammer frame 13 and the staple carrier 14 of the stapling head 12. The blocking piece 40 is connected to a withdrawal mechanism 44, 51, 54, 56 which withdraws the blocking piece from its blocking position only when, during a stapling movement, the stapling head has moved a predetermined distance towards the anvil 10. If the stapling head 12 cannot make the required movement towards the anvil 10 (for example due to the presence of the operator's hand) relative movement between the hammer frame 13 and the staple carrier 14 is prevented by the blocking piece, and ejection of a staple cannot take place. <IMAGE>
