Abstract

A metallic (Al alloy) inductor 1, for shaping liquid metal while it solidifies, has a cross-section which decreases upwardly, e.g. in steps as shown; it is in the form of a loop, and electromagnetic pressure, graded to oppose metallostatic pressure in cast metal 9 within the loop, moulds the metal until it solidifies, as at 10, coolant from a chamber 4 cools the loop and the casting 10. An electromagnetic screen may be used also. <IMAGE>
