Abstract

A rig for a sailing boat consists of a mast 1, a wishbone boom 12 projecting ahead of the mast, and two sails 3 of flexible material and identical shape, which are attached to the boom on either side of the mast. The sail combination is inflated into a solid aerofoil shape because part of the airflow enters through a gap between the luffs, which are situated forward of the mast, and is then constrained on exit by the pair of leeches which are joined close together. This arrangement overcomes a major disadvantage of single-sail versions of the balanced lugsail rig, which suffer from serious loss of efficiency when the sail is on the tack with it lying to windward of the mast. <IMAGE>
