Abstract

200,858. Constable, A. H. Feb. 22, 1922. Manure and seed distributors; rollers; multipletool cultivators, hoes, and ploughs; adjusting and lifting parts of.-An implement for sowing seeds in furrows, on ridges, or on the level, for distributing fertilizers, and for cultivating and earthing up, comprises transverse bars carrying groups of shares or hoes, and means for independently adjusting the bars vertically, for raising all the groups of shares by a single movement, and for adjusting the leading group laterally. A multipledisc cultivator is mounted in advance of the shares, additional shares furnished for loosening the soil consolidated bv the wheels of the tractor, and means provided for flexibly coupling several implements together side by side. The implement is mounted on several main wheels or rollers 2, Fig. 1, and a front steering-wheel. Furrow-forming shares 3, 4 are mounted on transverse bars 7, 8 in front of the rollers 2 and furrow-closing shares 6 on a transverse bar 9 behind the rollers 2 and seed spouts 5. The shares are all raised out of the ground by the movement of a single lever 22, the bars 7, 9 being rocked about their axes and the bar 8 raised vertically in guides 11. In order that the groups of shares mav be adjusted independently, the bar 8 is adjustably connected to the lifting-mechanism and the blocks carrying the bars 7, 9 are adjustable in vertical guides 11, the adjustments being made by moving or interchanging washers or distance pieces. The shares 4 are connected to the bar 8 by stirrup-shaped pieces 16 which are stiffened by engagement with a fixed bar 17 carrying scrapers 46 for the wheels 2. The bar 7 is adjustable endwise in its supporting- blocks so that the shares 3 may be arranged out of line with the shares 4, to form ridges, the outer shares being half shares. When the shares 3 are in line with the shares 4, the two half shares are mounted alongside one another to form a complete share. The disc cultivator 18 is raised by rocking a shaft 32 by means of a hand-lever and a link 30. In front of the disc cultivator is a transverse bar 21 carrying shares 20 for loosening the soil consolidated by the tractor wheels. Rocking the shaft 32 rocks the bar 21 and raises the shares 20. Three implements may be connected together as shown in Fig. 9. Each implement is provided with side brackets 39, 40, 41 and a rear bracket 42. The traction bars 43 of the outside implements are connected to the brackets 39 of the central implement, coupling-bars 44 to the brackets 40 of the outer implements and the brackets 41 of the central implement, and coupling-bars 45 to the brackets 41 of the outer implements and the bracket 42 of the central implement, loose connections being made bv means of drop pins. The steering- wheel of the central implement turns about a pivot the axis of which passes through the point of contact of the wheel with the ground. According to one of the Provisional Specifications, the machine may be provided with two steering- wheels, two main wheels, and vertically movable rollers, the groups of shares may be raised independently by means of levers, the shares may be of the kind described in Specification 174,882, or may have vertical walls at the back, and additional shares may be provided in front of the seed spouts. The front set of shares may be replaced for ridging purposes by another, or two sets may be provided on one cross-frame, either being brought into operation by rotating or sliding the cross-frame; also for cultivating and eartbing-up shares provided with tines may be substituted for the leading shares and the seed spouts and rear shares raised out of action. According to the other Provisional Specification, the steering-wheel may be arranged to act as a castor wheel, the mounting being such that castor or other wheels may be employed or interchanged.
