Abstract

A gastric reflux suppressant composition comprises an aqueous solution of a plant polysaccharide mucilage e.g. quince seed mucilage which is a drinkable liquid at a pH above that of the human stomach contents (e.g. above pH4) but forms a gel at the pH of the human stomach contents (e.g. pH 1 to 4), together with a physiologically acceptable low density liquid, such as a vegetable oil, which reduces the specific gravity of the composition to a value below that of the human stomach contents so that the gel formed in the stomach floats on the stomach contents. The composition may also contain sodium carboxymethylcellulose, fumed silica and cellulose.
