Abstract

Apparatus for the positioning of a welding means 15 in a correct position for welding a work piece includes a support 12 for supporting the welding means, a sensing means 16 for sensing the presence of a work piece, a traversing means 9 for moving both the sensing means and the welding means relative to the work piece, the sensing means being operative on alignment of the welding means at the correct welding position to cause the traversing means to cease operation, thus, leaving the welding means, in the correct position for a welding operation. As particularly described, a motor 9 traverses the welding means together with the sensing means parallel to the axis of a rotary workpiece 3 until a weld preparation is detected and the motor 9 consequently stopped. The sensing means comprises a pneumatic jet, change in back pressure on weld preparation detection giving rise to an electrical impulse controlling the motor 9. <IMAGE>
