Abstract

A laser amplifier includes a chamber (1) in the shape of a truncated pyramid which contains a gaseous active medium, e.g. C3F7I, and a plurality of flash tubes (2) suitable for exciting the medium, said tubes being arranged in planes passing through the apex (S) of the pyramid. A laser beam (F) is amplified while passing from the small end towards the large end, the chamber shape and flash tube disposition making it possible to keep the energy density uniform throughout the active medium, thereby enabling all the active medium to be used at a maximum useably energy density. <IMAGE>
