Abstract

A method and apparatus for serially transmitting data in the form of messages each including a plurality of bytes of data. The message to be transmitted includes first and second eight bit control bytes which are stored in respective first and second registers 520, 550. A change in byte size from a normal eight bit size during the message is indicated by bit D0 in the first register 520 being "0" the byte size after the change being represented by bits D3-D5. The second control byte indicates the location of the change. A counter 400 produces a carry output on an output line 454 for each byte transmitted, such carry output controlling the production of a load control signal for a shift register in which the data bits are entered prior to transmission. As each byte is transmitted, the count in the second register 550 is decremented and when zero is reached therein, the bits D3-D5 are loaded into a control register 560 so that thereafter the counter 400 is recycled through a count corresponding to the new byte size. <IMAGE>
