A cigar or cigarette lighter intended for use in safe areas within hazardous environments such as refineries has a mains transformer 11 with a safe, low voltage output and a plug-in glow unit 15. The glow unit can be easily removed for exchange so that the lighter does not need to remain unserviceable, which would encourage smuggling of matches or pocket lighters. <IMAGE>
