Abstract

The invention is concerned with establishing the datum level of a movable object e.g. a lance 14 or cartridge relative to another object e.g. the surface of a bath of molten metal in a metallurgical vessel 10. A voltage is applied to the movable lance which carries a probe 16 whereby contact of the probe with the bath surface causes an earth leakage current to be established. Electrical circuitry is incorporated to open a circuit breaker 22 upon flow of a predetermined earth leakage current and actuate an indication corresponding to the probe length on a distance measuring device 18 coupled to the movable lance. <IMAGE>
