Abstract
A method of operating a fluidised bed 4 includes the steps of feeding coal to and burning the coal in its bed, withdrawing agglomerated ash particles from the bed (e.g. through an outlet 3), reducing said particles (e.g. in crushing equipment 6) to a size compatible with that of the bed particles, and returning the so reduced particles to the bed (e.g. via a duct 30). The crushing equipment 6 includes crushing rollers 11; 12 one of which is resiliently biassed towards the other to compensate for any uncrushable matter which may pass therethrough. Crushed ash material passes through the outlet 18 and enters the conduit 30 in which the material is entrained in air for transport back to the bed 4. <IMAGE>
