Abstract

A crankcase 10 for a piston compressor is of improved structural rigidity by being double-walled, as viewed in a cross-section extending transversely of the crankshaft axis. The two walls 27, 29 surround the crankshaft 36 from one housing foot 26 to the other foot 24 in concave shape. In order to ensure that the structural rigidity of the housing is not reduced, there is provided a single opening (30) to one end face to provide access to the crankshaft during compressor assembly. The crankshaft 36 is mounted both in a mounting cover (34) secured opposite to the access opening and also in an undivided bearing carrier 40 which is formed integrally, by casting, with the inner 29 of the two housing walls 27, 29. Neck portions 12, 14 receive the V-arranged two-stage compression cylinders. In use the feet 24, 26 may be filled with cooling water. <IMAGE>
