Abstract

A process for treating the liquid effluent formed in the course of extracting oil from palm oil fruit, which comprises subjecting the effluent to fermentation under thermophilic or thermo-tolerant anaerobic conditions or to the action of synthetic thermophilic or thermo-tolerant enzymes under anaerobic conditions in order to degrade the pectin content of the effluent and thus facilitate separation of the constituents of the effluent.
