Brush-making machines.-A device for picking tufts of bristles from a hopper 15, Fig. 1, comprises a channelled or grooved slide 10 fitted with a grooved picking needle 11 and a pointed locking-needle 12, the point of which disengages the groove in the picking-needle prior to the inward movement of the slide 10 through an aperture in the hopper and enters the groove to withdraw a tuft during the outward movement of the slide. The needle 11 may be adjusted to determine the size of tuft required by means of a screw-threaded turn-button 17 engaging a projection on the needle. The locking-needle 12 is connected to a rod 14 provided with a handle 13 and has a limited movement relative to the slide 10 determined by a groove channel therein. The slide is provided with cam surfaces 23 which actuate a hinged forked member 22 so that the latter supports the bristles in the hopper when the slide is in its outward position and is withdrawn from the bristles during inward movement of the slide. A weighted presser-bar 25 rests on the bristles and is adapted to slide between vertical guide-members 26, one of which is hinged to facilitate insertion of the bristles in the hopper, during which operation the other member, provided with a spring catch 27, retains the presser-bar in its highest position. The sides of the box may be adjustable to suit different lengths of bristles, by being carried by two laterally-disposed bars connected by links, to a lever 29, rotary movement of which causes the sides to be moved towards or from each other. In a modified device, shown in Fig. 10, for use in conjunction with a brush-filling machine, the slide 10 is mounted to slide between stops 30. The width of the notch formed by the separation of the needles 11, 12 is determined by an adjustable stop 32b. A regulating screw 37 is provided for adjusting and facilitating the withdrawal of the needle 12. The presser-bar 25 may be arranged to work horizontally by being connected by wire or cord 32a passing over a pulley 33 to a weight or a spring 34. The invention also includes a construction wherein the needles are mounted to oscillate about a common centre.
