Abstract

An axial flow fan mounted on a vertical axis above an underground passage through which air is to be circulated, comprises a first stationary wall 6 extending upwardly of the fan impeller 1 and of increasing circular boundary dimensions in the vertically upward direction whilst being symmetrical about the fan axis to form an inner wall of a diffusion chamber 10 for air being extracted by the fan, a second stationary wall 8 comprising a lower conical portion 8b disposed below the impeller and co-axially therewith whereby air being extracted converges towards the fan blades 3 and a further upper portion 8a extending above the impeller and of increasing circular boundary dimension in vertically upward direction, the minimum circumference of the wall 8 being located in the same horizontal region as the impeller and dimensioned to clear the tips of the fan blades, the upper portion 8a forming the outer wall of the diffusion chamber 10 which chamber is of annular hydraucone form and in vertical section is curved outwardly from the fan axis. The fan is surrounded by a sound-damping wall 22. <IMAGE>
