Abstract

Drill drive mechanism, notably for drilling holes in mine roofs. The drill 12 is provided with helical projections 14 separated by an axial notch 58. The drill drive mechanism comprises a housing 40 in which a pair of opposed chains 32, 34, carried on sprockets, mesh with the drill 12 by means of suitable tangs 84 and grooves 36b formed on the links 36 of the chains. The links 36 are also provided with projections 38 to interlink the two chains when in mesh around the drill. Rotating the housing 40 results in rotating the drill 12, while rotating the sprockets results in rotating the chains and, thus, in displacing the shaft axially. These two functions are achieved separately thanks to a differential gearset provided between two motors and the housing and a gear operatively connected to the sprockets. Contours of links 36 and of drill 12 also permit to accommodate drills 12 of different diameters 173, to drill holes of different diameters without overhauling the drive mechanism. <IMAGE>
