Abstract

Polymer e.g. polyester, is extruded through two converging capillaries (26, 30) of a spinneret at different speeds to merge and form a combined stream. The stream is cooled to form a filament, which is withdrawn at a high speed to give yarn which self-crimps upon heating. In some embodiments, merging takes place substantially coincident with the face (28) of the spinneret, in other it takes place below the face; in the latter case, the yarn can be made to have a variable denier. Certain new yarns have non-round cross-sections and alternating S-twisted and Z-twisted helical crimp. A spinneret plate is described. <IMAGE>
