Abstract
Radio-hardenable liquid organic binders, containing per 100 parts by weight, 10 to 90 parts by weight of at least one radio-hardenable component A containing at least three radicals CH2=CH-COO- and 90 to 10 parts by weight of at least one copolymerisable diluent component B, the general formula of component A being: R(-OOC-CH =CH2)n wherein R is a straight or branched hydrocarbon radical, the chain of which is interrupted by at least one hetero-atom selected from oxygen, sulphur and nitrogen, and n is a whole number of from 3 to 15, and component B being a condensation product of (i) 1 mole of a polyhydroxylated aliphatic compound containing n hydroxyl groups and selected from alcohols, ether alcohols and oxyalkylated derivatives thereof; (ii) n moles of acrylamide; (iii) n moles of a saturated monohydroxylated aliphatic alcohol containing 2 to 12 carbon atoms; and (iv) two times n moles formaldehyde; n being a whole number of from 2 to 4. The binders are incorporated in compositions such as serigraphic inks, and varnishes for printed circuits, sealing watings and finishing paints. On exposure to u.v. light or accelerated electrons the compositions harden and yield coatings having good adhesion and resistance to thermal shock.
