Abstract

A power steering unit in which a worm 12 and worm wheel 26 drive a rack and pinion mechanism connected to the steering linkage and a double acting hydraulic power cylinder operable on the rack 20 is controlled by valve means actuated by translatory movement imparted to a pivot member 34 which is carried by a slider 36 and is common to the worm wheel and the pinion 22 driving the rack which have different pitch circle radii; this difference giving rise to the translatory movement of the pivot member. Backlash between the rack and pinion is reduced by piston and cylinder devices responsive to the pressure of fluid in the power cylinder and acting through balls on the back of the rack. A second pinion 24 meshing with the rack 20 is fast with an output shaft 28 carrying a drop arm 32 for connection to a steering linkage. <IMAGE>
