Abstract

The laser diode 2 of an optical radiation transmitter having an automatic control feedback system for normalising the optical output signal is protected from overload by arranging that the automatic controller 3 and detector 4 for controlling modulation of the laser diode provides an equivalent signal U2 when the modulation signal M fails to appear. This equivalent signal holds the laser diode at a low level operating value which, when the modulation signal reappears, will not overload the laser diode. <IMAGE>
