Abstract

A catalyst composition suitable for the formation of substantially gel-free copolymers and terpolymers of an isoolefin e.g. isobutylene,and one or more dienes having an Mn of less than 500,000 and a mole % unsaturation of 8 to 45 is the soluble reaction product formed in a solvent by reacting (a) a compound of the formula RmAlX3-m where R is C1 to C7 alkyl, X is chlorine or bromine and m ranges from 1 to 3 inclusive with (b) a halogen containing material this being Cl2, Br2, HCl, HBr or Cl - Br, the mole ratio of (b) to (a) being from 0.014:1 to 0.12:1.
