Abstract

A vapour-liquid contacting tray for use in a vapour-liquid contacting column contains a plurality of such trays spaced apart vertically and the disadvantageous phenomenon of penetrative weeping which can occur in such columns is eliminated or reduced by providing liquid discharge means for the vapor-liquid contacting tray 1, 2 having spout openings 19 in the floor members of the downcomers 10a, 10b. Lip means 20 are provided with a wall segment 21, 23 which extends transversely beneath the spout openings associated with the lip means, whereby liquid in the downcomer flowing through the spout openings is vertically damped and given a horizontal velocity component by the lip means for dispersed flow of discharged liquid onto the active portion 26 of tray surface area of an underlying tray. <IMAGE>
