Abstract
In a process for the production of an ester composition by reacting an excess of pentaerythritol with polyisobutene succinic acid or anhydride under esterification reaction conditions and thereafter filtering the crude ester product so produced to remove insoluble matter the filtration rate is significantly improved by washing the crude product with water, to cause aggregation of pentaerythritol fines prior to filtering. In a preferred embodiment a water soluble organic solvent, eg. pyridine or methylisobutyl ketone is included in the wash to promote contact between the water and insoluble matter. The invention is particularly applicable to the production of ester compositions having a high total hydroxyl to ester group ratio.
