Abstract

A tolualdehyde e.g. p-tolualdehyde is oxidised to the corresponding phthalic acid by molecular oxygen in an aliphatic C2 to C8 monocarboxylic acid solvent at 160 DEG to 200 DEG C using a catalyst comprising a cobalt compound, a manganese compound and a bromide, the proportion of cobalt being 500 to 2500 ppm of the solvent, the proportion of manganese 1 to 30% of the weight of the cobalt and the proportion of bromide at least 1.5 times the combined weight of the cobalt and manganese.
