Abstract

Decorative acrylic blocks are formed by producing fracture planes inside a transparent or translucent acrylic block by introducing an organic solvent optionally containing a dye into a hole formed in a fully polymerised block. The hole may be formed during moulding of the block or, preferably, after polymerisation is complete in order to introduce extra strain. The hole wall may be lightly tapped. The fracture planes may be subsequently developed by heat treatment, which also removes internal strain in the finished article.
