Abstract

A rack and pinion gear assembly and a steering gear including such an assembly in which the pinion (4) is rotatably mounted in a multipart pinion housing (10, 11) and the rack bar (2) is mounted in bearing bushes (24) carried in a tubular rack bar housing (3). The rack bar housing has an opening (22) in its side wall through which the pinion engages with the rack bar teeth and the rack bar housing (3) is laterally adjustable towards and from the pinion (4) to adjust the lateral positioning of the rack bar (2) and thereby the meshing of the pinion and rack teeth. Adjustment of the rack bar housing (3) is by a screw (26) which controls lateral biasing of the housing (3) by a spring (27). The rack bar housing (3) and pinion (4) can be retained by assembly around them of the multiparts (10, 11) of the pinion housing. <IMAGE>
