Abstract

Tobias Acid (2-amino-1-naphthalene- sulfonic acid) is obtained by reaction of beta-naphthol with chlorosulfonic acid wherein the initial reaction between these two reactants is conducted at about 0 DEG -10 DEG C. with a mole ratio of chlorosulfonic acid to beta-naphthol of about 0.85-1.15:1 for about 5 to 120 minutes, whereafter the reaction mixture is held in a holding vessel at 0 DEG -10 DEG C for about 5 to 60 minutes and then in a later stage of the process, subsequent to the amination reaction, an extracted aqueous phase of alkali metal and ammonium salts of Tobias Acid is acidified to a pH about 1.8-2.5 to form a slurry from which Tobias Acid can be recovered.
