Abstract

The present invention provides oil recovery apparatus comprising first (11) and second (12) rope loops of an adsorbent material arranged for floating on the surface (13) of water contaminated by oil which is preferentially adsorbed by the loops, an extraction unit (21) through which the loops are simultaneously advanced to remove oil, and in respect of each loop one or more guide units at which the loop is guided around guide means (14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19), wherein the first and second loops both extend away from the extraction unit in the same or substantially the same direction and when both viewed from above advance in opposite rotational directions, whereby transverse loads exerted on the extraction unit by one of the loops are opposed by transverse loads exerted on the extraction unit by the other of the loops. <IMAGE>
