Abstract

A microprocessor (28) based electronic sequence programmer for use e.g. in a washing machine is arranged to control the machine (via interface 33) through an operating cycle with various parameters of the machine being set in accordance with stored (at 31) values appropriate to the operating cycle. The programmer causes the display (through interface 32) of suitable values of parameters (e.g. in its application to a washing machine, the amount of detergent to be used) which are set by the microprocessor, in accordance with other parameters (e.g. fabric type, colour, load and degree of soiling of the clothes to be washed) selected (at 26) by the operator. The sequence of operations controlled by the microprocessor then represents an optimum in terms of energy consumption and operating effectiveness. <IMAGE>
