Abstract

Metal working fluids and other oil- containing functional fluids have improved resistance to microbial attack, as they contain a biocidally-effective amount of a polyoxymethyleneoxazolidine selected from: (a) compounds having the structural formula: <IMAGE> wherein each R represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a phenyl group, a halophenyl group or a -(CH2O)mCH2OH group m is 0, 1 or 2 and n is 1 to 4; (b) compounds having the structural formula: <IMAGE> wherein each R' represents an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms or a -CH2OH group and R and n have the meanings given above, except that a form where m = 3 is described; and (c) mixtures thereof.
