A method of operating a radiating device such as an incandescent or fluorescent light 1, comprises chopping a power supply 3 to make it discontinuous and such that its effective value is substantially the same as the rated voltage of the device. Chopping is effected by means of a circuit including at least one unidirectional or bidirectional thyristor 5. <IMAGE>
