Abstract

A safety device for a lifting magnet has sensor means 18,20 responsive to flux produced by the magnet in the magnetic circuit including the load 14 to be lifted, a transducer 22 responsive to the tension in the lifting wire or the like supporting the load and the magnet together with a comparator circuit 26 effective to compare signals from the sensor and from the transducer and to provide an output to an alarm and indicative of a safety margin between lifting tension and the force available for lifting: A device 30 measures the tilt of the magnet from the vertical and its output signal is combined in an amplifier 24 with that from the transducer 22 representing the weight of the load and the magnet. The combining amplifier 24 produces an output representing the combined effect ofthe total load and the tilt. The preferred magnetic field senser is an induction coil wound around a movable pole piece adjacent the load, from which the signal is integrated and squared. <IMAGE>
