Abstract

Disclosed is a liquid separation apparatus for separating a desired solution from a pressurized feed solution by means of at least one semipermeable membrane sheet supported by a cloth having a plurality of grooves through which a permeated solution flows. The cloth is composed of at least one composite yarn, each yarn having first (4) and second (3) components of high polymers different in a specific characteristic, such as melting point, solubility or degree of swelling. The first yarn component is fused by a heating treatment, dissolved into a specific solvent or swollen with a specific solvent to act as a binding agent, so that the cloth is made rigid enough to resist a high fluid pressure of the feed solution, so as to ensure a smooth flow of the permeated solution through the grooves. There may be a perforated backing sheet between the cloth and the membrane sheet. <IMAGE>
