Abstract

The present invention relates to heat exchanger elements and to heat exchangers including a number of such similar elements. Heat exchanger elements (HE, M and MHE) have primary and secondary heat transfer surfaces (5,7) which are cast integrally with one another, the secondary heat transfer surfaces (7) preferably being formed by pins (7) and preferably by investment casting. The invention enables heat exchanger elements to be made of modular form to serve as manifold elements and to incorporate integral manifolding. The invention overcomes the difficulties normally experienced when joining aluminium to itself, enables a heat exchanger assembled from such elements to achieve a compactness which surpasses that which is currently achieved with separate secondary heat transfer surfaces fabricated from foil, with additional thermo-dynamic benefits particularly with high temperature heat exchangers and permits the assembly; of heat exchangers in a variety of ways to suit specific applications.
