Abstract

209,839. Baumann, K., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Md. Oct. 19, 1922. Expansion joints.-A joint for pipes connecting flanges &c. subjected to relative motion is designed to allow angular flexibility without imparting endthrust. A flexible joint such as is shown in Fig. 1 comprising a short tubular member having a corrugation 8 is provided externally with two tiemembers 9 pivotally connected with the pipes at opposite ends of the joint. In a modification only one tie-member is employed. In a third modification shown in Fig. 3, the tie-member comprises two links or rods 11 disposed on opposite ends with gimbal rings 12 pivotally mounted on the ends of the pipes. With this form of the joint the latter is capable of flexure in any plane through its axis. The flexible joints described above are particularly suitable in an expansion pipe arrangement such as is indicated in Fig. 4 wherein the flanges 13, 14 subjected to relative movement are connected by an expansion pipe 15 having such flexible joints at opposite ends and at an intermediate point.
