Abstract

A retractable reel assembly comprises a reel (10) having an electric cable or cables (48) wound thereon. The reel (10) is rotatably mounted on a fixed shaft (18) and is axially slidable along the shaft (18) by means of an actuating member (20) from a first position (as shown) in which an electrical plug member (52) connected to the inner end of the cable is disconnected from an electrical power supply socket (56) to a second position in which the plug member (52) is connected with the socket (56). A torsion spring 44 anchored at one end to the reel and at its other end to a slot 46 in the shaft allows axial movement of the reel to be effected while also biasing the reel 10 in the recoiling direction. The reel is housed in a cover member 16 and markings on the reel and cover member have to be aligned to allow the plug member to pass through an aperture 54 in the cover member 16 and engage the socket 56. Member 66 guides cable during uncoiling. The cable may be used to recharge batteries in fork lift trucks. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An improved retractable reel assembly The present invention relates to a retractable reel assembly of the type used for accommodating a length of flexible hose or the like which is coiled on the reel for storage and can be withdrawn therefrom against the action of a torsion spring or springs.
At the present time the recharging of batteries, particularly in industrial use such as fork-lift trucks, results in problems in that the electric cables interconnecting the power supply and batteries are of considerable length and extend over the floor with the resultant possibility of damage due to personnei treading on them, heavy vehicles passing over them and contamination from lubricants, or the like, on the floor.
Furthermore, when not in use, these cables are often hung from adjacent brackets or hooks and are thus still subject to damage.
Attempts have been made to overcome these disadvantages, but in the main these have resulted in costly and/or complicated structures and the object of the present invention is to overcome the above disadvantages in a simple and inexpensive manner.
The present invention consists in retractable reel assembly comprising, a rotatable reel having at least one electric cable wound thereon and axially slidable between first and second positions, the reel being provided with electrical coupling means connected to one end of said cable and which, in said first position, are disconnected from a power supply means and, in said second position, are electrically coupled therewith.
In the accompanying drawings: Fig. 1 is a cross-section through a retractable reel assembly according to the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a front view of Fig. 1.
In carrying the invention into effect according to one convenient mode, by way of example, the reel assembly comprises a reel 10 and a cover member 12 of semi-circular shape which has a base 14 and a flange 1 6. The reel 10 is rotatably mounted on a fixed shaft 1 8 and is slidable axially therealong by means of an actuating member 20 which is retained on the shaft 1 8 by a circlip 22.
The reel 10 comprises spaced discs 24, 26 having, respectively, centrally disposed apertures 28, 30, the discs forming the sides of the reel 10 and being interconnected by a plurality of circumferentially spaced bolts 32 and nuts 34 which are parallel with but radially spaced from the shaft 1 8. Spacers 36 effect the positioning of the discs 24, 26. The actuating boss 20 has a stepped portion 36 on whcih the apertured disc 24 is fixedly mounted by means of fastening members 38, whilst the apertured disc 26 is fixedly mounted on a stepped hub 40 by means of fastening members 42.
A torsion spring 44 is positioned between the discs 24, 26 and is anchored at one end in a longitudinally extending slot 46 formed in the shaft 1 8 with its other end anchored to one of the spacer bolts 32 interconnecting the discs 24, 26.
The slot 46 enables the reel to effect the axial sliding movement along the shaft referred to above. The torsion spring 44 creates a bias tending to turn the reel 10 in the recoiling direction.
A pair of electrical cables 48 are coiled on the reel 10 and each has one end 50 fixedly connected to an electrical connector or pin 52 extending outwardly from the disc 26. The electrical connectors 52 are positioned adjacent each other to form an electrical plug and are aligned with an elongate slot 54 in the base 14 of the cover member 12. The pair of electrical connectors 52, in use, are adapted to slidably engage with a pair of electrical sleeves 56 forming the output socket of a battery charging board 58 when indicator marks 60 and 62 on the cover reel, respectively, are in alignment and the reel 10 is moved bodily into the cover 12 by pushing the actuating member 20.
A guide member 64 fixedly connected at one end to the shaft 1 8 has its other end terminating in a substantially circular portion 66 through which the cable 48 passes when being uncoiled from the reel 10. The other end of the cable 48 is provided with a battery connector 68.
It will be appreciated that use of the retractable reel assembly described above greatly reduces the fire risk which is otherwise present if the charging cables are exposed at all times.
