Abstract

A saw bench having a trough 4 for receiving a log also includes a pivotable arm 6 the free end of which can be clamped down on the log so as to hold it firmly in position in the trough 4. In a preferred arrangement the arm 6 is pivotable on an upright post which is slidable longitudinally of the trough 4 and the arm 6 and post can be clamped in position by the cranked members 24 engaging in nuts 28 on either side of a pair of bifurcations straddling a member such as arched member 20 or longitudinal frame member 21. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Saw bench Field of invention The invention relates to saw benches especially but not exclusively for holding wooden logs for sawing. The invention may have industrial and household application.
Background of invention Sawing logs with a motor saw can be hazardous and/or difficult even when proper supports are used for sawing.
It is the objection of the invention to provide a saw bench which is particularly convenient and safe in use.
Summary of invention The invention provides a saw bench including a pair of sides for forming a trough for receiving a work piece (such as a log), an arm having a pivot at the end and movable up and downwardly, when pivoted, at the other free end and a clamping means for securing the arm so as to cause the free end of the arm to firmly hold the work piece in the trough. The combination of features provides a simple saw bench for safely sawing a log.
Suitably the free end carries a serrated member adapted for being pushed towards the work piece. This permits a good grip to be established between the arm and the log.
Preferably the clamping means can be secured at either end of the trough. The saw bench can thus be more flexibly used and the arm can be positioned in any place desired along the log. To permit compact storage advantageously the sides are on a pair of mutually pivoted scissor action frames to enable the bench to be stored compactly.
In an advantageous form of construction the arm pivot is on an upright post having an arched part concentric with the pivot, the arm is bifurcated to straddle the arched part, and a turnable threaded member is provided for pulling the bi-furcations together and clamping them onto the arched part at any pivotal position of the arm desired. Conveniently then the post is slidably longitudinally of the trough and a further clamping means is provided for securing the post. The clamp arrangement for the arm can be constructed at economic cost, and the arm can clamp firmly and be changed easily.
Drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a saw bench according to the invention; Figure 2 is an end view of the saw bench of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an enlarged side view of an arm clamping device of the saw bench of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is an enlarged top view of the arm clamping device of Figure 3 Specific embodiment With reference to the Figures, a saw bench has a V-shaped trough 4 the sides of which are formed by wooden planks 6 screwed on scissor action frames 1 6. One frame 1 6 mounts an arm 6 which is pivoted on a shaft 8 at one end and carries a serrated member 12 at the other end.
The member 12 has a flat portion 13 so that the member 12 can be pushed easily into gripping contact with a log. Near the shaft 8 the arm is associated with a clamping means 10 for securing the arm 6 at any desired angle.
The frames 16 are mutually pivoted at 17 and can be secured either in the open position for sawing or in the closed position lying side by side for storage by a latch member 19. One frame 16 has a longitudinal member 21 mounting a generally upright post 18 which in turn can be clamped by clamping means 14 at any position lengthwise of the trough 4.
For best operation and ease of construction, the arm clamping means 10 includes an arch member 20 concentric with the shaft 8. The arm 6 has bi-furcated parts 22 passing on either side of the arch member 20. A cranked threaded member 24 passing through the bi-furcated parts for threadingly engaging a nut 28 held against rotation by a lug 30. Rotation of the crank is limited by a removable stop 26.
The clamping means 14 is similarly constructed. Instead of clamping an arch, the longitudinal member 21 is clamped.
Corresponding parts of the clamping means carry the same reference numerals in the Figures as the parts of the clamping means 10.
In use, the clamping means 10 and 14 permit a log to be clamped easily and securely using parts not much affected by wear or lack of maintenance.
The member 12 may have aperatures to enable other attachments to be fitted for the sawing or working of different materials or for-different operations.
