Abstract

A damp-control rendering for alleviating the effects of penetration of moisture into the walls of buildings comprises a mixture of sand, cement and lime with a kaolin-rich clay material, an inert fibrous material such as a mineral wool and an alkali metal salt of an organic fatty acid such as potassium oleate.

Description

SPECIFICATION Damp control rendering This invention relates to damp-control renderings, that is to say compositions for rendering walls of buildings to reduce the problems caused by the penetration of moisture.
Known rendering compositions of sand, cement and lime, applied as an aqueous mixture, do not in practice give much protection against damp. It is common knowledge that old houses built without damp-proof courses frequently suffer from damp in spite of the application of such renderings to the inside of the walls.
According to the present invention a composition for rendering walls of buildings to reduce the effects of penetration of moisture comprises a mixture of sand, cement and lime, together with at least 1 5% of a kaolin-rich clay material, at least 5% by weight of an inert fibrous material and at least 1% by weight of an alkali metal salt of an organic fatty acid. Preferably the inert fibrous material is a mineral wool.
It has surprisingly been found in practice that the combination of the clay material, the insert fibrous material such as mineral wool and the alkali metal salt of a fatty acid, confers extremely effective moisture control characteristics on the composition. The inert fibrous material also improves the thermal insulation properties, while the alkali metal salt of a fatty acid is known to act in such situations as an inhibitor to the growth of deleterious salts.
Preferably the proportions of the components in the mixture are within the following ranges: Sand 15 to 30% by weight Cement 1 5 to 30% by weight Lime 15 to 30% by weight Kaolin-rich clay material 1 5 to 30% by weight Inert fibrous material 5 to 1 5% by weight Alkali metal salt of fatty acid 1 to 5% by weight The most preferred compositions comprise: Sand 20 to 25% by weight Cement 20 to 25% by weight Lime 20 to 25% by weight Kaolin-rich clay material 20 to 25% by weight Mineral wool 8 to 10% by weight Alkali metal salt of fatty acid 1 to 5% by weight The composition will generally be mixed with approximately one-half of its weight of water for application to a wall. The amount of water may be slightly less (say 48% by weight) where a stiff mix is required for use on difficult surfaces, or slightly more (say 52% by weight) where a wet mix is required for normal surfaces.
It is preferred that from 20% to 80% by weight of the clay material has a particle size greater than 75 microns, and less than 60% has a particle size less than 40 microns in diameter. More preferably, from 30% to 60% of the clay material has a particle size greater than 75 microns and less than 30% has a particle size less than 40 microns in diameter.
The preferred kaolin-rich clay material is a material in which the dominant clay mineral is kaolinite, with either muscovite and/or hydrous mica and/or illite and with quartz and/or tourmaline as associate minerals. Illite is a general term for the clay mineral constituent of argillaceous sediments belonging to the mica group. The clay material preferably has a total SiO2 content of 50% to 85%, advantageously from 67% to 77% by weight.
The clay material preferably has a content of kaolinite of from 1 5% to 60% by weight, and a total content of muscovite and/or hydrous mica and/or illite of from 8% to 40% by weight. The particularly preferred clay material has a content of kaolinite of from 30% to 45% by weight and a total content of muscovite and/or hydrous mica and/or illite of from 10% to 30% by weight.
The preferred alkali metal salt of an organic fatty acid is potassium oleate, which is preferably present in a proportion of approximately 3% by weight.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail by way of example.
In this embodiment, a dry mix is made of the following components in the quantities specified: Sand 5.50 kgs.
Cement 5.50 kgs.
Lime 5.50 kgs.
Kaolinite clay material containing 5.50 kgs.
Silica 70.6% by weight Material above 75 microns 44% by weight Material below 40 microns 22% by weight Kaolinite 37% by weight Muscovite and hydrous mica (Total) 15% by weight Mineral wool (sold under the Registered Trade Mark SPINROCK FOB 2.70 kgs.
by Rockwool International A/S) Potassium oleate (0.7 litres) 0.66 kgs.
25.36 kgs.
The dry mix is homogenised in a suitable high shear mixing apparatus, e.g. of the Eirich type. The resuiting dry mixture when required for use on a normal surface is mixed into 1 3 litres of water (52% by weight of the dry mix) either by hand or by the use of a suitable rotating pan mixer, e.g. a conventional cement mixer. For difficult surfaces where a stiffer mix is required, the amount of water may be reduced to 12 litres (48% by weight). The resultant composition is then applied to the exposed masonry of the moisture-affected internal wall surface (after removal of existing conventional renderings and finishes).
The composition is applied in the conventional manner using normal rendering and plastering tools and is allowed to dry and cure. After a partial set of the applied composition has taken place further trowelling or floating to an acceptable finish will be possible.
Tests on the walls of old houses, both with and without damp-proof courses, have shown a remarkable improvement in the effects of dampness in previously afflicted areas.
The composition is normally applied to the internal wall surface but-has also proved effective when applied to the exterior surface.
Various types of mineral wool may be used as the inert fibrous material, for example that sold as granular ROCKWOOL (Registered Trade Mark) by Rockwool Limited, of Pencoed, Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan, Wales.
