Abstract
An ion exchange membrane which comprises at least a layer of fluorinated polymer which contains -COONa or -COOK groups, and optionally a layer of fluorinated polymer which contains -SO3Na or -SO3K groups, which membrane contains therein a microporous polytetrafluoroethylene sheet which has been stretched in at least one direction, and which membrane has been fabricated by melt lamination, is described. The membrane may optionally have an external reinforcing fabric adhered to one surface thereof. Such membrane can be used as the separator between the compartments of a chloralkali cell, and such a cell operates at low voltage, high current efficiency, and low power consumption. <IMAGE>
