Abstract

A sanitary napkin which is provided with a fluid permeable cover and a fluid impermeable baffle as well as a double layered absorbent batt. The absorbent material is characterised by different densities in its different layers with the layer closest the body of the wearer having a density between 0.03 and 0.15 grams/cc and the other layer having a density greater than the first layer. It is preferred that the second layer contain compressed densified areas for fluid direction purposes.

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in and relating to sanitary napkins This invention relates to a sanitary napkin and particularly a sanitary napkin having improved absorbency capability.
A sanitary napkin is generally composed of an absorbent layer, a fluid impervious baffle and an outer wrap which overlies both the absorbent layer and the baffle and is fluid pervious. Fluid enters the absorbent layer through the fluid pervious cover material. It is desirable that the menstrual fluid be removed from the surface of the absorbent layer, primarily for two reasons. First, if the fluid is spread out on the top of the absorbent layer facing the body and the underside of the cover material, surface pressure applied to the cover material by the wearer may provide strikeback, i.e. fluid flow back through the surface of the cover material. The more highly saturated the absorbent material is, the more likely the strikeback phenomenon is to occur. The second reason is one of aesthetics. When the wearer sees the spreading of a staind portion along the top of the absorbent layer, it is visually displeasing as well as giving the usually force impression that the absorbent capacity of the napkin is fully utilised.
The desire to convey fluid rapidly away from the surface of the absorbent layer closest to the body of the wearer, however, can further limit the useful absorbent capacity of the napkin because by rapidly converging the fluid through a central area, the side area of the napkin is not fully utilised. Several attempts have been made to either convey fluid away from the top surface of absorbent or else to utilise fluid directing means of varying densities in an attempt to provide preferential absorbency in different areas of sanitary napkins. An example of one such approach is disclosed in U.S. Patent No.
3,545,441 in which a single layer of absorbent having a density gradient with denser portions concentrated toward the centre of the absorbent mass is provided.
Another somewhat more complex configuration is U.S. Patent No.3,494,362 in which layers of conventional absorbent material are separated by fibres of the same absorbent which have been densified, i.e.
by embossing, and positioned at right angles to these layers. U.S. Patent No. 1,910,872 discloses a sanitary napkin having three separate layers with a densified component located between two traditionally fluffy cellulosic absorbent batts. U.S. Patent No.
4,057,061 discloses a sanitary napkin having its entire absorbent core volume reduced by compression is the absorbent component in its entirety. Other sanitary napkins which disclose compression and multi-layer construction are U.S. Patents Nos.
2,952,259 and 4,103,062 and British Patent No.
1,563,697.
While the prior art recognises that densified absorbent material can be utilised for fluid direction and, in some instances, increase fluid absorbency, the construction of these devices is complicated and cumbersome. In addition, the problem of stain control relative to absorbent top layer wetting in conjunction with efficient absorbent use has not been completely satisfactorily addressed.
According to this invention, a sanitary napkin is provided having two absorbent layers both of conventional cellulosic material in battform. The uppermost layer, i.e. that proximal to the wearer's body, has a density of 0.03 grams/cc to 0.15 grams/cc. The second absorbent batt which is beneath the first absorbent batt has a density greater than the first.
The second absorbent batt is one which has compressed areas preferably located longitudinally along the surface of the batt and occupying from 5 to 25% of the surface area.
The sanitary napkin of this invention provides a two layer absorbent with excellent stain control and maximum absorbent capacity utilisation. Such a napkin can be provided utilizing conventional manufacturing techniques.
The combination of the relatively open pore structure represented by the upper absorbent layer and the comparatively dense bottom layer provides for rapid fluid transport through the top layer in a localised area and preferential absorption along the bottommost absorment layer. By adding compressed zones longitudinally along the top surface of the bottom absorbent layer, the menstrual exudate passing rapidly through the topmost absorbent portion will be conveyed rapidly directionally along the surface of the bottom layer of absorbent utilising essentially uniformly the majority of the bottom absorbent layer. Compression of the bottom surface of the absorbent batt can be obtained by a variety of means including embossing and when compression is complete, 5 to 25% of the surface of the bottom layer should be compressed.Density in the compressed layer is preferably between 0.40 and 1.0 grams/cc. For purposes of maximum absorbent efficiency, the compressed areas should be sinuous as well as longitudinally oriented.
For maximum protection and efficiencyforthe napkin of this invention, it is preferred that the fluid impermeable baffle is brought up along the side of the napkin and actually overlie a portion of the top cover material. This is to allow for maximum longitudinal fluid distribution without side straining or side leakage. Due to the construction described above, the bottom layer of absorbent is utilised first and, after saturation, the bottom of the top layer of absorbent material starts performing an absorbent function. As a result of the rapid fluid passage initially through the absorbent, however, until the pad is almost completely utilised, there is no top staining along the upper surface of the top absorbent layer except in a very small area directly beneath the portion of initial fluid penetration. In this way the absorbent material of both layers is more completely utilised.
The invention will now be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view partially in cross-section of one embodiment of sanitary napkin in accordance with this invention.
Referring to the drawing, the sanitary napkin has an overwrap 13 completely encircling the other components of the napkin. This napkin is sealed by means of fusing the cover to itself at the top and bottom portions, e.g. by ultrasonic means as represented by band 11 inset from the longitudinal extremeties of the napkin. A top absorbent layer 15 having sinuous compression lines is indicated in this Figure by embossment lines 12. The baffle 14 is located underneath the bottom of the absorbent layers and extends upward along the sides of the absorbent layers as well as covering a portion of the absorbent layers at the top of the body facing first absorbent batt. Attachment means (notshown) are provided for attaching the sanitay napkin to the undergarment of the user. These means are well known in the art and are generally a single or a plurality of adhesive strips provided on the bottom, i.e. pantyfacing side of the sanitary napkin.
This invention provides a simple combination for maximum utilisation of absorbent material. As a result of the effectiveness of this combinaion, it is possible to produce a napkin ofsubstantiallyre- duced thickness having absorbent capabilities equal to a napkin of conventional thickness. In a particularly preferred embodiment of this invention, a napkin having an absorbent layer thickness of 1/2" and 1/4" is provided. This napkin will perform in a manner substantially equal to a conventional thick sanitary napkin having no compressed or embossed areas.
