Abstract
A method for the production of lighting display units comprises placing a plurality of lamps or bulbs 1 in a polyester resin 3 partly filling a channel casing 4, applying further polyester resin over the lamps or bulbs and finally levelling off and polishing the surface of the resin to produce a matt surface. Alternatively, a tube of P.T.F.E. is embedded in the resin and this tube is withdrawn when the resin has hardened and replaced by a chain of lamps. The casing 4 may be made of aluminium, hardwood, concrete, plastics material, etc. The lamps may be wired in groups in series, the groups being connected in parallel. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Lighting Display Apparatus
This invention relates to lighting display apparatus.
Lighting displays are already known comprising a series of fluorescent tubes or striplights for example, beneath transparent areas of dance floors or suspended as signs or decorations. Also known are chains of light bulbs or lamps which may be encased within flexible or rigid transparent plastics tubing which may then be embedded in any suitable medium to form a lighting display, for example, in a floor, wall or staircase, or the tubing may be suspended to form a lighting display.
An object of this invention is to provide alternative lighting display apparatus which does not make use of plastics tubing and is suitable for providing lighting displays in a wider range of environments.
According to the invention a method for the production of lighting display units comprises applying a plurality of lamps or bulbs connected in series and arranged in parallel in a polyester resin partly filling a channel casing, applying further polyester resin over the lamps or bulbs and finally levelling off and polishing the surface of the casing to produce a matt surface.
The invention also includes a lighting display apparatus comprising a chain of light bulbs or lamps embedded in a polyester resin contained in a channel casing, the lamps or bulbs being connected in a plurality of groups wired in series, the groups being connected in parallel to an electric supply and the surface of the resin being polished to provide a matt surface.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings:- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a section of light bubs or lamps mounted in a translucent resin in a channel;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan of same;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modification in which the light bulbs or lamps are connected to a common return wire for bulbs flashing in succession.
A chain of coloured light bulbs or lamps 1 wired in known manner in series and parallel, is embedded in a translucent polyester resin 3 in a channel 5 in the upper surface of a casing 4 of metal or hard wood.
The chain of bulbs or lamps comprises a plurality of groups of light bulbs or lamps wired in parallel, with each group comprising three bulbs or lamps wired in series between power supply wires 2. An electric current is applied to one end of the wires 2 connecting the chain of light bulbs or lamps so that the voltage across each group is approximately 24V and the voltage across each light bulb 1 is approximately 8V. The power rating of each bulb is approximately 0.5W when a voltage of 12V is applied.
In one arrangement, the bulbs or lamps operate well below the possible maximum wattage so that the lifetime of substantially every bulb or lamp is significantly increased and they may last several years.
In manufacturing the apparatus, a channel 5 of appropriate depth and cross section is made in
metal or hard wood casing 4. The polyester resin
3 is a two-component or three-component resin, comprising the basic plastic material itself and a
hardener, optionally with a catalyst and/or
inhibitor.
The two or three components of the polyester
resin 3, and mixed together in a suitable container, for example, of polythene and the
resulting mixture, which is now capable of setting,
is poured into the channel 5 until it is
approximately half full. The light bulb or lamp
chain is laid on the partially hardened resin 3 in the said channel 5 with the ends of the connecting wires 2 hanging out of one channel end to be available for connecting to a current source with the interposition of a switch.
The light bulb or lamp chain adheres to the partially hardened resin 3, which holds the said chain in position approximately halfway up the groove depth. After a short period of time, the
upper half of the channel 5 is filled with resin 3 so as to protrude slightly above the channeled surface of the casing 4. Two-stage filling of the channel 5 is necessary to embed the chain of light bulbs or lamps substantially centrally within the
resin 3.
The resin 3 fills substantially all interstices between the light bulbs or lamp chains and the walls of the channel 5 in the casing 4. Before the resin 3 is fully hardened the exposed upper surface thereof is trimmed with a sharp blade to the level of the channelled surface of the casing 4.
When the resin 3 is hard, the trimmed surface is polished to give a matt appearance so that bulbs 1 or lamps 2 and wiring are not clearly visible when the display is not in use. The ends of the wires 2 are connected to an external source of current with the interposition of a switch or switches which may be transistorized electronic control switches. An illuminated display is effected by switching all the bulbs 1 or lamps 2 on permanently, or in a predetermined chasing pattern.
In a further arrangement as shown in Fig. 4 a plurality of chains or light bulbs are connected to a common return wire 2a for operation in sequence.
In further embodiment the light bulbs or lamps are embedded in the resin either singly in recesses, plurally in channels or a combinatimn of these two arrangements in the display surface of an outer casing material, the wire connections from the said bulbs or lamps leading through one or more small apertures to a channel on the undersurface of the casing material where the wires may or may not be embedded in resin.
In a stiil further embodiment a carrier is formed by embedding a tube of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in resin in a recess or channel in an outer casing material, removing the said tube (which is non-adhesive) once the resin has hardened, and inserting a chain of light bulbs or lamps wired in series and parallel into the cylindrical space vacated by the tube.
The casing or foundation material may be metal or hardwood but it may alternatively be aluminium, a plastics material, concrete or any other material which is relatively noncombustible.
The form of the casing or foundation is appropriate to the intended environment of the lighting display. For example, lighting may be required in an appropriate design in the upper surface or side surface of a handrail, or in any surface of the handrail supports, in the front or upper surfaces of steps in a staircase, or in the surface of a floor, wall, window frame or suspended signs or in any other appropriate surface.
The light bulbs or lamps may be of the normal transparent or translucent type, or they may be coloured, and there may be one, two or three or more light bulbs or lamps in any group wired in series, and any number of groups wired in parallel.
The resin may be any suitable two-part or three-part setting resin. In all cases it is possible to repair the apparatus in the event of a fault by removing a section of resin, replacing one or more bulbs or lamps or a section of wiring, and refilling the section with resin by the same procedure as above described.
