Abstract

A lock has a circular body (1) set in a door panel (20) and has a recessed handle 2 including a lock cylinder (3) controlled by a key to free or lock the handle and a fastening bolt (5) secured for rotation with the handle. The support body is in the form of a circular dish (1) the bottom of which has a groove (16) in the form of an arc of a concentric circle having a middle widened portion (10), the cylinder (3) is mounted eccentrically in the handle and parallel with the axis of rotation thereof, the said cylinder being terminated by a flat portion (9) acting in the said groove (16) to produce locking as shown in Fig. 4, or when turned through 90 DEG , to release the handle for rotation. Additional bolts may be operated by links (17). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Mortise lock The invention relates to a mortise lock with turning handle, usable especially but not exclusively for furniture.
Locks are known, for example for furniture or automobile vehicles, which are actuated by a turning handle, it being possible for the pivoting of the handle to be prevented, or in certain locks to be totally free without driving the locking mechanism, for the locking position of the lock.
The known locks of this type generally have a handle protruding far from the surface of the door, which is an apparent nuisance and can even be dangerous. Moreover these known locks can be mounted in only one single angular position and with one single direction of rotation for unlocking.
They necessitate significant tool equipment for fitting, with the use of intermediate parts.
Furthermore they do not generally permit simple adaptation to different types of closure. They likewise necessitate specific means for retention of the lock cylinder.
The present invention aims at eliminating these drawbacks of known locks.
To this end the invention has for object a mortise lock with turning handle comprising a support on which a handle pivots, a lock cylinder controlled by a key to free or lock the said handle, and a locking piece fast in rotation with the said handle, characterised in that the said support has the form of a circular dish the bottom of which has a groove in the form of an arc of a concentric circle having a middle widening, the cylinder is mounted eccentrically in the handle and parallel with the axis of rotation of the latter, the said cylinder being terminated by a flat portion lodged in the said groove, the width of which flat portion is less than that of the groove but the length of which is greater than the width of the groove and less than the diameter of the said widened portion.
Thus with very simple means the lock according to the invention permits of obtaining an insettable assembly of very reliable operation. For preference a small plate is lodged between the handle and the bottom of the support, the said plate comprises a central aperture for the passage of the shank of the handle and an eccentric cutaway portion co-operating with a groove formed in the cylinder, the said plate comprising a peripheral lug co-operating in a recess formed in the base and running over a portion of a circle.
The invention will be clearly understood on reading of the following description given with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein: FIGURE 1 is an axial sectional view of a lock according to one example of embodiment of the invention, in the locking position, FIGURE 2 is a view of the lock according to Figure 1 from beneath, FIGURE 3 is a view of the lock according to Figure 1 from above, FIGURE 4 is a plan view, on a larger scale, of a detail of Figure 2, and FIGURE 5 is a view of a detail in the direction of the arrow F in Figure 2.
The lock comprises a body or base 1 in the form of a circular dish lodged in an aperture of a door and in which a handle 2 pivots. The handle 2 carries a lock cylinder 3 mounted eccentrically and parallel with the axis of the dish. A small plate 4 is lodged between the handle 2 and the bottom of the dish 1 and is pierced by the shank 1 5 of the handle 2. A locking piece 5 is fast in rotation with the handle 2 and comprises two diametrically opposite spindles 6. An elastic piece 7, free in rotation, bears upon the ends of the spindles 6, the locking piece 5 and the elastic piece 7 being retained by a screw 8 screwed into the shank of the handle 2.
The extremity of the cylinder 3 opposite to the handle comprises a flat portion 9 (Figure 4) lodged in a circular groove 1 6 of the support 1 which comprises a circular widened portion 10 in its middle part. In the locking position as represented, the flat portion 9, which has a length greater than the width of the groove 1 6 but less than the diameter of the widened portion 10, is immobilised transversely in the widened portion 10 after withdrawal of the key. Thus the handle 2 is immobilised.
The plate 4 comprises an aperture 11 cooperating with a groove 12 of the cylinder 3 so that the plate 4 retains the cylinder 3 and is fast in rotation with the handle 2. The plate 4 is equipped with a peripheral lug 13 which can move in a circular recess 1 4 of the base 1. In the locking position as represented the lug 1 3 abuts on one extremity of the recess 14. If the user rotates the cylinder 2 through a quarter turn by means of the key, the flat portion 9 comes into the position perpendicular to that in Figure 4 and can move in the groove 1 6. This rotation can take place only in the clockwise direction (in Figure 3) by reason of the abutment of the lug 13. The amplitude of rotation is limited by the abutment of the extremity 9 of the cylinder 3 on the extremity of the groove 16.
If the user wishes to use the other direction of rotation, after removal of the screw 8 it is sufficient to cause the plate 4 to carry out a half turn. The lug 13 will come into another position which will permit rotation in the other direction, and only in this other direction.
The locking piece 5 in the course of rotation of the handle 2 causes the sliding of two rods 1 7 articulated respectively on the spindles 6. In the example as represented the locking piece 5 comprises a notch 1 8 which permits the locking of a sliding door or a better closure at three points. If the notch 1 8 does not exist, there will be a simple three-point locking, and if the whole protruding part of the piece 5 is removed, there will be solely a two-point closure. On the contrary if the rods 1 7 are eliminated while the protruding part is retained, there will be a single-point closure.
The whole apparatus can be supplied fully assembled, preferably with the piece 7 at 900 in relation to the drawing. The fitter places the rods 1 7 on the spindles 6 and then with a tool provided with two lugs lodged in holes 19 in the piece 7, he rotates the latter until the holes 1 9' of the piece 7 come to lodge by snap engagement over the extremities of the spindles 6, immobilising the piece 7.
The lock can be clipped on the panel 20 of the furniture through the intermediary of elastic tabs 21 of the base 1 equipped with slopes 22 which fold back into recesses 23 of the base 1 in the pushing of the lock into the furniture. When the panel 20 of the furniture is bearing upon the face 24 of the piece 1, the elastic tabs 21 resume their initial position, taking up a position 25 (Figure 5).
When the whole is assembled with the screw 8 tightened, play is such that the handle 2 with the plate 4 rotate freely in relation to the base 1.
