Abstract
207,508. Champion, E. L., and Terrisse, A. A. G. H. Nov. 25, 1922, [Convention date]. Rail-cleaners. -- An apparatus, which can be removed from the rail track which it, cleans, consists of a vehicle body provided with a certain number of tools actuated bv the movement of the vehicle body or by an auxiliary motor; the dust, dirt and the like detached by the tools being withdrawn into the interior of the vehicle body by means of an air fan actuated by an auxiliary motor or by the movement of the vehicle. The rail cleaners, Fig. 3, comprise a revolving tool 12 shaped similarly to a milling cutter, a spring controlled scraper 24 and a revolving brush 23. The dirt dislodged from the track is drawn by the fan 4, Fig. 1, into the vehicle, the fan being driven by gearing from the rear axle. The rail cleaners are pivoted by an arm 31 to the front axle and can be raised from the track by a hand lever 28 through links and bellcrank levers. The revolving tools 12, 23 are connected by chain gearing and the spindle of the tool 12 is connected through bevel wheels to a shaft which passes through the arm 31 and is geared to the front axle. The vehicle wheelshave flat or half round india-rubber tyres and at the side of each wheel is disposed a guide roller 33, Fig. 5, pivoted to an arm the roller being raised or lowered into the groove in the rail by jointed links 35. The vehicle may be self propelled so that it can be used as an automobile for road travel and the fan may be driven by an auxiliary motor.
