Abstract

The sleeve (10) for a clutch release bearing assembly is made from a vibration and noise damping material and has one or more radially outwardly extending projections (11) for contact by a clutch actuating lever (13). Embedded in the or each projection (11) is an insert 21, 23, 24 of a more rigid material which stiffens the or each projection and limits any wear that may occur of the thin layer of material between the insert and the clutch actuating lever. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A sliding sleeve for a clutch release bearing assembly This invention concerns a sliding sleeve for a clutch release bearing assembly and includes the assembly having the sliding sleeve.
The invention provides a sliding sleeve for a clutch release bearing assembly, the sleeve being made from a vibration and noise damping material and having one or more radially outwardly extending projections, the or each projection providing an axially facing surface for engagement by a clutch actuating lever, wherein an insert of a more rigid material than that of the rest of the sleeve is completely embedded in the or each projection in the vicinity of the said axially facing surface and stiffens the or each projection.
The projection may comprise an annular flange and the insert may comprise an annular disc.
The insert may comprise an annular axially extending portion embedded in the tubular portion of the sleeve and one or more radially outwardly extending portions embedded in the or each projection.
The sleeve may be made from a plastics material and the insert may be made from steel.
The invention also includes a clutch release bearing assembly including a sliding sleeve according to the invention.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a longitudinal section through a clutch release bearing assembly.
The clutch release bearing assembly shown comprises a sliding sleeve 10 made from a material which damps vibration and noises for example a resiliently deformable plastics. The sleeve 10 has a tubular portion and a radially outwarding extending annular flange 11 providing an axially facing surface 12 for engagement by a clutch actuating lever 1 3 (shown in chain-dot).
Disposed around the sleeve 10, on the other axial end of the flange 11 to the lever 13, is a rolling bearing 14 comprising an outer race ring 15, an inner race ring 16 and an annular row of balls 1 7 arranged to roll on the raceways of the two race rings. The outer race ring 1 5 is arranged to bear on the flange 11 by means not shown. The inner race ring 1 6 is extended axially in a direction away from the flange 11 and has a radially outwardly extending flange 1 8 with an axially facing surface 1 9. The tongues 20 of a clutch diaphragm spring abut the surface 1 9 of the flange 18.
Embedded completely in the flange 11 is an insert 21 made from a material more rigid than that of the rest of the sleeve 10, for example steel. The insert 21 is an annular disc disposed in the vicinity of the surface 12 of the flange, the insert having a surface 22 axially facing the lever 13. The thickness of the layer from surface 12 to surface 21 is made relatively thin. The insert 21 stiffens the flange 11 in the region of the abutment faces of the actuating lever 13 and limits any wear that may occur of the thin layer between the insert and the actuating lever.
Radial and axial wobble of the clutch diaphragm spring often causes vibration to build up in the bearing leading to premature failure of the bearing. The dogs of the actuating lever are pressed into the noise and vibration damping material preventing rotation of the sleeve relative to the lever and the build up of vibration in the bearing. The axial vibrations caused by the axial wobble of the clutch diaphragm spring are damped and prevented from being transmitted through the bearing and actuating lever to the clutch pedal.
Modifications to the described and illustrated embodiment are envisaged. For example, instead of a radial annular flange 1 two diametrically opposed radially outwardly extending projections may be provided. The insert 21 may then comprise an annular axially extending portion 23 (shown in dashed line) completely embedded in the tubular portion of the sleeve 10, and two radially outwardly extending portions 24 (shown in dashed line) completely embedded in the radial projections.
With the radial annular flange 1 the insert 21 may also comprise the annular portion 23 and the portions 24 may then be an annular flange.
The tubular portion of the sleeve 10 adjacent the actuating lever 1 3 may have two flats or a double edge engaged by the lever so that the sleeve is fixed for rotation with the lever. The insert can then be shaped correspondingly with a thin layer of the vibration and noise damping material between the insert and the surfaces of the actuating lever.
