Abstract

Cubes (2) having different coloured faces each bearing a letter of the alphabet are positioned in a transparent holder having a flexible ejector strip (5) attached at one end. The game is to form a word without any two of the faces having the same colour. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Game The subject of this invention is a game and particu larly a word game employing pieces to be arranged according to certain rules.
A game according to the invention comprises a number of cubes each having at least two faces of different colours and each bearing on one face a letter of the alphabet, and a holder for holding the cubes in a row in such a way that the letters on adjacent faces of the cubes in the same plane may be read as a sequence.
The holder may be channel-shaped and may be of a transparent material so that the letters on faces of the cubes lying against the sides of the holder can still be distinguished through the material of the holder.
The holder, particularly when channel-shaped may be fitted with a flexible strip attached to the bottom of the channel at one end of the holder and capable of lying along the length of the holder and projecting beyond the other end of the holder in such a position that cubes inserted in the holder lie on top of the strip.
In addition to the cubes bearing letters there may be included two supplementary cubes of a distinguishing colour and bearing selected words appropriate to the rules of the game.
In one form of the game there are six coloured cubes utilizing the colours black, yellow, blue, red, green and gold with at least some cubes having at least two faces of different colours and the two supplementary cubes are white.
In one form of the game one of the white cubes carries the definite article "the" and the other carries the word "variation". This is for a reason to be explained during the description of how one form of the game is to be played.
The game may be played to either of two sets of rules. In the first set of rules the cubes are to be arranged in the holder in such a way that a phrase for example "the enigma variation" is formed by using the white cube carrying the word "the" first and the white cube carrying the word "variation" last with the other cubes so arranged that the uppermost faces make the word "enigma but such that no single colour appears twice on the row of faces bearing the letters forming the word "enigma" and also on any other row of faces. This operation is performed successively by different players and the winner is the playerwho succeeds in forming the phrase "the enigma variation" in the shortest time.
More than two players may play forming themselves into teams with all members of a team being allowed to contribute to the team effort. The rules may allow for the allocation of bonus points in the event that when the word chosen is assembled in the holder another word is formed along any other row of adjacent faces of the cubes as seen through the transparent holder.
The second form of the game may be played by inserting all the cubes in the holder in any order on top of the flexible strip, then pulling the strip up sharply so that the cubes are ejected from the channel on to a table then selecting the cubes according only to the letters revealed on the uppermost faces and placing the cubes in the holder to form a chosen word. One point is awarded for each letter used in forming a word. For example, if the word enigma has been chosen and this word can be formed from the letters appearing uppermost six points would be counted. If the white cube bearing the word variation falls within this word uppermost this counts as any letter of the alphabet and may be used in any position to form the chosen word. When the white cube forming the word "the" falls uppermost three points are counted. This form of the game may also be played against a time limit and may also include an award of bonus points for any word formed at the same time on another row of adjacent faces. Two smaller words may be formed instead of one word using all six cubes.
Aword in a language other than English, may be formed but before this is done the player proposing to form the word in the other language must specify the language and points may be awarded according to the language chosen and the word formed.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which 1 denotes a holder in the form of a channel formed of transparent material, 2 denotes cubes each bearing on one face a letter of the alphabet and each having at least two faces of different colours and 3 and 4 denote supplementary cubes, the cube 3 bearing the word "the" and the cube 4 bearing the word "variation". 5 denotes a flexible strip protruding from one end of the holder 1 and fastened to the bottom of the holder at the other end of the holder so that upward movement of the free end of the strip seen in the drawing will cause all the cubes to be ejected from the holder 1.In the illustrated example the phrase "The enigma variation" has been formed on the uppermost set of faces and another word "monkey" has been formed at the same time on another set of faces (as seen through the transparent holder) thus qualifying for the award of bonus points.

2. A game as claimed in claim 1 in which the holder is channel-shaped and is of a transparent material so that the letters on faces of the cubes lying against the sides of the holder can still be distinguished through the material of the holder.
