Abstract

A circular saw blade is mounted on a driving shaft (1) by means of a mounting hub or collar (2, 3). The hub or collar is adapted to support a plurality of radially extending cutter arms (7) provided at their radial outer ends with cutting bits (8) the cutter bits (8) are located within apertures (11) of the circular saw blade, the cutter bits being arranged symmetrically to the plane of the blade whereby they can serve to profile the severed edges of strips (13) of material simultaneously with cutting of said material by the circular saw blade. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in and relating to saws This invention concerns improvements in and relating to saws, and more especially to circular sawing machines of the kind having a plurality of saw blades spaced along a common driving shaft in order to cut a sheet of material into a plurality of strips.
Known sawing machines of the above kind have the drawback that they are of limited scope and require a very substantial capital outlay whilst being able to perform only a single function referred to above. Such machines would be more attractive if they could be adapted to carry out a greater number of functions.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a circular saw assembly, comprising a circular saw blade mounted on a driving shaft by means of a mounting hub or collar, said hub or collar also being adapted to support a plurality of radially extending cutter arms provided at their radial outer ends with cutting bits, and the arrangement being such that at least the extremities of the cutter arms carrying said cutter bits are located within apertures of the circular saw blade such that the cutter bits are arranged symmetrically to the plane of the blade, whereby said cutter bits can serve to profile the severed edges of strips of material simultaneously with cutting of said material by the circular saw blade.
By means of an arrangement in accordance with the invention, it is, for example, possible simultaneously to cut a sheet of material into strips and to bevel the cut edges of the strips.
This enables hitherto separate operations to be carried out simultaneously thus improving the scope of use of the saw assembly in relation to known machines.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation, shown partly broken away, of a circular saw assembly in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig.
1.
Referring to the drawings, a circular saw assembly comprises, in known manner, a drive shaft 1 to which is fixed a driving hub or collar 2. Upon the collar 2 is threaded a locking ring 3 which serves to secure in place the two halves of a split circular saw blade 4.
The halves of the saw blade 4 are apertured to engage over studs 5 of the collar 2.
An arrangement as so far described is conventional and well known. In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, however, the hub 2 is provided with a plurality of radial slots 6 within which are located radially extending arms 7 of cutters comprising cutter bits 8 located at the outer radial extremities of the arms 7. The cutting bits 8 may be of the replaceable type in which case they are seated within recesses 9, and retained by means of fastening screws 10. The cutting bits 8 are accomodated within apertures 11 of the saw blade so that they extend symmetrically to the plane of the saw blade.
The cutter arms 7 are retained within the slots 6 of the collar 2 by means of fastening screws 12 engaging slots 7A. This allows limited radial adjustment of the arms 7 for accurate setting of the positions of the cutter bits 8.
As shown more clearly in Fig. 2 the illustrated assembly enables a sheet of material 13 simultaneously to be cut by means of the circular saw blade 4 and to be provided with beveled edges by the cutter bits 8. This substantially improves the utility of the sawing machine in comparison with previously known arrangements.
It will be appreciated that although the cutter bits 8 are shown as being of generally square profile in order to provide a 45 beveled edge on the sheet material to be cut, they may be of any desired profile according to the profile of the edge desired on the cut sheet material.
1. A circular saw assembly, comprising a circular saw blade mounted on a driving shaft by means of a mounting hub or collar, said hub or collar also being adapted to support a plurality of radially extending cutter arms provided at their radial outer ends with cutting bits, and the arrangement being such that at least the extremities of the cutter arms carrying said cutter bits are located within apertures of the circular saw blade such that the cutter bits are arranged symmetrically to the plane of the blade, whereby said cutter bits can serve to profile the severed edges of strips of material simultaneously with cutting of said material by the circular saw blade.
2. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1, in which the said cutter arms are adjustable in position relatively to said hub or collar, along an axis extending radially to the latter.
3. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, in which said cutting bits are detachably secured to said cutter arms.
4. A circular saw assembly substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
5. The features as herein described, or their equivalents, in any novel selection.
