Abstract
206,086. Revelli, B. A. March 22, 1923. Machine guns; cartridge magazines.-Cartridge magazines are in the form of a rectilinear box adapted to hold two piles of cartridges side by side and provided with means for compressing the feeding-spring to allow of easy insertion of a packet or clip of cartridges. The magazine shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 3<a> is hinged at the side of the breech-body 5 and is provided with a link 7 adapted to compress the feeding-spring 3 when the magazine is turned down. The magazine is charged by a clip of cartridges inserted through an opening in the back wall. The clip comprises a strip 12, Fig. 3a, of thin sheet metal or other flexible material folded so as to surround the cartridges from end to end and provided at the back with an extracting tab 13. After the clip has been inserted, the opening in the magazine is closed by a sliding cover 11 which passes be tween the bases of the cartridges and a back loop 12' on the clip. The clip is then removed by a pull on the tab 13. In the magazine shown in Fig. 5, the feeding-spring 3 is mounted in a side compartment and the feeder 4 is hinged to a slide 22, and when in its lower position can be moved aside to allow the cartridges to be charged into the magazine from the bottom. The cartridges are carried by a clip 25, Figs. 7 and 8, of flexible material, having turned back side edges 25<1> and a tab 26. After the packet has been inserted the feeder moves back to its operative position and the clip is removed downwards. The magazine shown in Figs. 9 and 10 is fitted above the breech body, and the cartridges are loaded through the mouth of the magazine, the breechbody being formed with a through aperture to permit the insertion of a charging frame, Fig. 13. The feeder can be raised, to compress the feeding spring, by a knob 113. Spring pawls 115 retain the cartridges. The pawls are formed with half-round pivots 119 acted on by spring plungers 116. The charging-frame has a handle 132 and two grooved bars 128, 129 to receive the ends of the cartridges. The frame with the cartridges is inserted until the last cartridges are engaged by the pawls 115, and the frame is then removed. The magazine is secured by side flanges 103 fitting in grooves in the breech body and by a spring catch at the front. A catch for holding the breech open when the magazine is empty comprises a pawl 122, Fig. 9, pivoted to the breech-body and adapted to be turned to engage the breech-block 127 bv a rod 123 actuated by an inclined lug 120 on the feeder.
